The Collection: Ruyi (As You Wish)
In Chinese society, elements of many ancient stories of dragons pervade cultural aesthetics everywhere. In “Grand Wish of the Dragon,” swirling elements of wind and cloud are illuminated in an effulgent glow of sun-soaked ambers. The dragon abstraction here is sculpted in the direction of billowing breezes and tree-shaking gusts, coming together in a composition that is reminiscent of the auspicious ruyi leitmotif found in artworks of royalty since the dawn of Far East civilization. This piece possesses subtleties such as the well-balanced juxtaposition of low reliefs carved on the piece’s surface with negative reliefs found embedded within the crystal itself. The feeling that one gains from beholding such an artwork is humbling, resulting in nothing but respect for the expression of sheer and raw natural force.
