LORETTA H. YANG

CHANG YI

Loretta H. Yang’s work has met with admiration and astonishment almost in equal measure, bridging, as it has distinctively, very diverse worlds, differing glass cultures, and ancient artistic and iconographic traditions.”

--- Andrew Brewerton, Director of The National Art Museum of China

Loretta H. Yang 杨惠姗, Glass Artist & Founder
Taiwan, 1952 - Present

Loretta H. Yang is the pioneering artist behind contemporary Chinese liuli glass. She has devoted her life to the art of liuli for more than three decades and in the process has revived the ancient Chinese technique of glass casting and instigated the contemporary glass art movement in Asia. Yang’s creative artistry was honed during her work as an acclaimed actor in the 70s and 80s. A two time recipient of the Best Actress Award at the Golden Horse Awards and Best Actress Award recipient at the Asia Pacific Film Festival, she left the industry at the height of her career to pursue the calling of contemporary liuli art. Yang’s sculptures are imbued with a rich Chinese heritage and have been acquired for the permanent collections of renowned museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Palace Museum at the Forbidden City in Beijing and the New York Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

“Through Asian philosophy and contemporary design, Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi have given Chinese LIULI new meaning--- this is the methodology behind their creative designs. They have grasped the aesthetic qualities and observed the foundation of the material to create a unique LIULI language.”

--- Di’an Fan, Director of The National Art Museum of China

Chang Yi 张毅, Glass Artist & Founder, Marketing Director
Taiwan, 1951 - 2020

To revive the lost art of Chinese liuli, esteemed Taiwanese film director Chang Yi founded LIULI Crystal Art with artist Loretta H. Yang. The New York Times has dubbed Chang “Father of the Asia Studio Glass Movement”. Chang’s vision unites contemporary liuli art with traditional craft art through a cultural lens. He treats liuli as a courier for love and death, reality and illusion, light and shadow, complete resplendence and shattered disillusionment. Chang Yi’s style is uninhibited and free-spirited; he bestows his work with boundless possibilities and looks to literature and Zen Buddhism as his creative guides.
